January 2008 In this
issue..
In this issue we have articles by Gene Huddleston, Phil Shuster and Thomas W. Dixon, Jr. This is probably the first occurrence of this since the early 1970s. As many of you know, it was Gene who suggested to Tom that they develop an informal group of people interested in the C&O and send out a newsletter. Phil came along and loaned Tom a bunch of his photos and lent his knowledge whenever needed, and the C&O Historical Society was born. Here we are 39 years later and the three of them finally do a magazine with major article from each!
The articles deal with some not-so-common subjects. First Gene tells us about how the appearance of the great G-9 Consolidations changed over the many years of their nearly half-century of service, concentrating on the running boards and how they had to be changed based on new appliances that had to be fitted to the boiler, etc. Secondly, Phil tells us about the C&O supply train that used to deliver supplies to stations all around the system on a regular cycle, and about the day he rode it on the Hocking Division. This is real first-person history about a subject that has hardly been mentioned in this publication, ever. Finally, Tom writes a primer about C&O tunnels. It’s strange how some things are seldom treated, such as tunnels. Tunnels are important features on many C&O lines, yet they are hardly noticed in publication. Modelers should certainly know about them, and historians should be interested in how they affected traffic.

For those of you who have been a part of the Society
for a while, you may remember a similar publication
called "Observations". We've been without a community
newsletter too long and so are beginning again with
this issue. We've chosen the name "Backshop" because
that's where the work of building and growing the
Society will be done. Download the latest issue and see what your Society is doing!
