G-7s 963 (1903 Richmond) awaits assignment at St. Albans in 1954. Its power reverse gear requires elevating a comparatively short section of the running board. Until the 1920's, of course, 963 had an "Armstrong" reverse lever. Cab's right front door or "window" is open, evidence that engineer could climb forward through it, gaining access to front of locomotive via running board. (E. L. Huddleston)
