October 2007 In this
issue..
IIn this magazine we have a second
installment of Al Kresse’s great icing station
articles. The first was printed in the April
issue this year and treated the Clifton Forge
facility. This one covers the large operation
at Russell. (View the Helm Roberts sketch here.) Al has again given us important
information about C&O freight operations
and the technology of railroading in the high
epoch. Several years ago he reminded us of
livestock operations in a three-part article,
and now he tell us of the perishable freight
business, which was very much an important
part of the C&O, even though we most
often think mainly of coal when considering
C&O operations.
The second piece in this magazine is a
general overview of the C&O’s 90200-90299
series steel cabooses built in 1949, the first
new cabooses after World War II.
These cars were as typical a C&O steel
caboose as one could want and they came on
the road at the height of C&O’s operations,
at the end of steam and the beginning of
diesels. They started in red paint, went to
yellow, and ended in Chessie System livery.

For those of you who have been a part of the Society
for a while, you may remember a similar publication
called "Observations". We've been without a community
newsletter too long and so are beginning again with
this issue. We've chosen the name "Backshop" because
that's where the work of building and growing the
Society will be done. Download the latest issue and see what your Society is doing!
