Clifton Forge, VA
- C&O steel caboose
90219 rapidly approaches completion as volunteers apply lettering during
the work session April 21- 24, 2004. The paint scheme portrays a 1953
Raceland Car Shop rebuild.
Our
caboose was originally built in 1949 by American Car and Foundry Co
in St. Louis MO.
Ken Miller of Salem, VA and Doug Andre of Roanoke, VA assisted by Jeff
Kehler of Fishers, IN and Ron Herfurth of Charlottesville, VA under
the direction of Henry Hoffman put the finishing touches on the Chesapeake
and Ohio herald Friday afternoon. This car is on display at the C&OHS'
Smiths Creek Yard in Clifton Forge. Volunteers have spent over a year
repainting the car to its original, as-delivered paint scheme. The caboose
was built in 1949 by the American Car and Foundry Company in their St.
Louis shops. It was used in regular service by the C&O and the Chessie
System until its retirement in 1982 and was acquired by the C&OHS
in the mid-1990's.
