POWER BUILDERS - Tracks Magazine - February, 1949 - This article is taken from the February 1949 issue of Tracks Magazine and tells the story of how a steam locomotive was designed and procured in brief terms. Although tailored to general consumption the story does give some insights into the process.

SPEEDING SANDY'S TRAFFIC - Tracks Magazine - April/May, 1949 - This short article talks about new CTC and other signal installations on C&O's heavily traveled coal line up the Big Sandy from Ashland, Ky. to Elkhorn City. In the post-war era C&O was constantly upgrading its signals and signal systems until in the 19650s almost every part of the heavily traveled sections were controlled by CTC.

PRECIOUS PARTNERSHIP - Tracks Magazine - February, 1949 - This story tells how C&O built a new line to accommodate a large new coal mine and the partnerships that were necessary between the coal operators and the railway.

CHESSIE-TRAY PREVIEW ON THE PM - Chesapeake and Ohio Lines Magazine - March, 1952 - This article on new tray meal service is taken from the March 1952 issue of "Tracks" magazine as C&O was promoting what was essentially an air-line style meal which it was introducing on some trains to help cut the big losses dining cars always incurred. The article is from the March 1952 issue of "Tracks" magazine.

FIVE MILLION DOLLAR SPLASH - Chesapeake and Ohio Lines Magazine - February, 1952 - The launching of C&O's new ultra-modern coal-fired car ferries for the cross Lake Michigan run in 1952 was big news. The car ferries were inaugurated early in the 20th Century by the Pere Marquette, had grown to a considerable sized fleet which was inherited by C&O when the PM was merged in 1947. The "Badger" and "Spartan" became the Queens of the Fleet and served to the end. One in still in private operation on one of the old C&O routes. This article is lifted from the February 1952 issue of C&O "Tracks" Magazine.

CAPTAIN OF THE GEORGE - Chesapeake and Ohio Lines Magazine - April, 1952 - This article was lifted directly from the April 1952 edition of "Tracks" Magazine, and tells the story of the work of a conductor on "The George Washington", C&O's premier passenger train, traveling overnight between Washington and Cincinnati (with connections between Charlottesville and Newport News, Va., and Ashland and Louisville, Kentucky).

New Type Car On The Sportsman - Chesapeake and Ohio Lines Magazine - January, 1931 - This article from the January, 1931 issue, is the first in the C&O magazine to extol the comfort and fine appointments of the new "Imperial Salon" coaches that were introduced on the new "Sportsman" train in April 1930. The Imperial Salon cars were used on the name trains up until WWII when most were converted to higher seating capacities. Among the best coach accommodations ever offered in American railroading without extra fare, these cars were the pride of the C&O.

CAN HANDLE ALL LAKE COAL OFFERED - Chesapeake and Ohio Lines Magazine - January, 1931 - During the period after about 1910 C&O began to ship huge quantities of coal westward for metallurgical purposes As a result it acquired the Hocking valley Ry in Ohio to give at Great lakes access through Toledo, and between 1917 and 1926 built the C&O Northern Subdivision to connect the mainline just west of Russell, Ky. with the HV at Columbus. After that time the shipment of westbound coal actually exceeded eastbound traffic. Here C&O President Brooke in 1931 talks of this business.

In New Station At White Sulpher - Chesapeake and Ohio Lines Magazine - January, 1931 - C&O built a new passenger station at White Sulphur Springs in 1930 that served until the end of passenger service and beyond, well into the Amtrak era. It is now used as a year-round Christmas shop for the Greenbrier Hotel. This is a one-page PR piece about the new building soon after it was built.

Mechanical Mining - It's Progress - Chesapeake and Ohio Lines Magazine - April, 1940 - In the 1930s and 1940s mechanization was making good headway in coal mining and this article from the April 1940 issue talks about innovations of the era.

FIRE ENGINES - The Yard Loco Does Double Duty - Chesapeake and Ohio Lines Magazine - January, 1931 - Many steam locomotives carried fire-fighting equipment but it has seldom been discussed. This one-page article from the January 1931 issue of C&O Lines Magazine talks about that subject.
